An excellent, lace-on cover for one's steering wheel is a superb alternative to an OEM leather-covered steering wheel. These quality leather covers are a very good alternative, IMHO. There are the rare OEM leather-covered steering wheels for the Miata (I have one, which I re-conditioned), as well as good leather, lace-on covers for the typical plastic OEM steering wheel. OEM Steering wheels are perhaps not ideal for daily use, but there are other things to consider. No expert, but having a steering wheel that will not fracture and further injure me, in the event of an accident, is something to consider. But it does shift feels "snickier".it's just straight up perfect. Of course it's all about feel which is subjective. My restored Nardi Evolution restore needs work.so the NA stocker went in.ĭude.it's night and day. So I ordered another one.and it too was ultra heavy. So I bought an NA factory base knob from was so heavy I thought I got ripped off. I found a busted 95m stocker.recovered it and it made me think.huh? It felt quite a bit better. I replaced it with a Nardi Evolution.which I restored. I wasn't a believer since I hadn't driven a car.much less a Miata.in 7 years. The shifting experience is KNOWHERE near as nice with a wood knob. M-Edition Miatas have wood lever and knob, in not terribly matching appearance. You have to hope a satisfactory wheel matches whatever knob and lever you find. You will hate the wood shift knobs, depending on if you value function, or appearance. For aesthetics I colored the replacement knob with SEM tan paint, matching my tan leather shift boot and seats. Attempts to rectify this with epoxy were unsuccessful, so I eventually replaced it with an original early Miata knob. Mine eventually developed a rattle as the inner sleeve separated internally from the body of the knob. It is also very light, with almost a hollow feel to it. First it sits taller, reducing the toggle like feel to the Miata’s shifter. The wood knob, as mentioned, does not feel as good as the original Miata knob. Because the top surface of the knob is end grain it stains darker than the hand brake, even if they are the same wood, and are stained with the same stain. The Nardi shift knob that came with certain Miatas, like my 91 BRG has a set screw under the bottom rubber trim. End grain soaks up significantly more stain than face grain, so it always stains darker than the surrounding wood. The reason is the way that wood accepts stains. Very hard to match shift knob and brake handle color.
